Prepare an Ohio plumbing contractor application with the right records
Scope checked October 12, 2026: the OCILB plumbing contractor route, experience evidence, examination sequence and state charges. A local authority may impose separate registration, permit and inspection requirements.
Separate the plumbing contractor license from local work rules
Ohio lists plumbing as a licensed trade under Chapter 4740. The OCILB credential belongs to the qualifying individual and is assigned to one contracting company. It does not create a single statewide journeyman card for every plumber or decide which local permits a project needs. Start with the project address and the local building department, then match that answer to the state contractor route. The statutory definitions explain the distinction.
Document plumbing experience before you apply
The ordinary route uses five years immediately before filing as a tradesperson in the licensed trade. The Board can consider specified alternative evidence, but the applicant should identify the route and show the plumbing duties rather than submit a job title without context.
| Record | Useful detail |
|---|---|
| Payroll or self-employment records | Dates, employer or business and the plumbing work performed. |
| Permits, inspections or project logs | Address, system involved and your responsibility on the job. |
| Apprenticeship or approved training | Issuer, completion date and the experience credit requested. |
Hypothetical example: an applicant has three years installing water and drain systems and two years as a general construction estimator. That may not equal five years of qualifying plumbing trade experience because unrelated general-contracting work is not automatically credited. Explain the gap and ask the plumbing section to assess the records under the qualification rule.
Follow approval, examination and issuance in order
Submit the application and criminal-record check first. After approval, schedule the plumbing trade and business-and-law examination with the authorized testing agency. Each part requires 70%, and examination approval expires one calendar year after receipt of the completed criminal-record check. The state fee rule lists $25 for the examination application, $25 for initial issuance and $60 for annual renewal. Budget separately for testing, background checks, $500,000 minimum contractor liability insurance and local charges. Consult the examination rule and fees and insurance rule before paying.

Important Ohio rules and boundaries
- The OCILB contractor license is not a universal statewide journeyman plumber card.
- Local plumber and residential-contractor credentials may apply.
- The individual license and contracting-company assignment are linked but distinct.
- Backflow approval and project permits can be separate.
Ohio may separate the credential held by a worker from the contractor license held by the business, while preserving local authority over permits and inspections. Confirm every applicable layer before bidding, advertising or beginning regulated work.
Ohio plumbing license cost and renewal
Budget separately for education, examinations, state and local credentials, insurance and project permits.
Renew each state and local credential separately and verify current charges before filing.
Government charges are only part of the expected cost. Training, examination preparation, fingerprints, surety premiums, insurance, equipment calibration and local permits can add to the total.
